The Crocodile River Challenge, affectionately known as ‘The Croc,’ has long been regarded as one of the crown jewels of the South African paddling scene.

“The Croc is a dream race for many paddlers, winning it means your name is alongside some of the greats in paddling history. The challenge it presents is unparalleled and it’s a race that demands skill and respect for the river,” said De Swardt.
He added leading up to the event, he prepared physically and mentally. “I made sure my equipment was in top shape, with a focus on my steering system and emergency kit.
“Mentally, I reminded myself to enjoy the experience and embrace the community aspect of the race. Fortunately, I had just come back from a river race in the Free State, so my skills were fresh.”
The training was no small feat, involving a tailored regimen under the guidance of Olympian Esti Olivier. “I trained for three months specifically for the Crocodile River Challenge. This included three sessions at the gym each week and seven paddling sessions, capped off with long weekend paddles to simulate race conditions.”

The conditions on race day were near perfect. “We were incredibly fortunate with the weather and grateful for the water release from Kwena Dam.
“The race course is almost non-stop rapids, and while the water level was slightly lower than last year, it added to the excitement of navigating through the hidden rocks.”
The challenging sections of the river are what De Swardt thrives on. “I embrace them; it’s where the true thrill of paddling comes alive. There’s nothing quite like the rush of making a clean run through a rapid.”
Crossing the finish line as the first U23 finisher was a moment of triumph for De Swardt. “It feels fantastic to see the results of my hard work. I’ve poured so much effort into my training, and it’s rewarding to see that pay off.”
Looking ahead, De Swardt has set his sights on the prestigious Drak Challenge in Underberg. “After that, the focus will shift to the SA Marathon Championships, where I aim to secure a spot in the U23 men’s team going to Hungary.”
