From November 28 to December 8, XP Arena will compete against some of the best teams in the world, further showcasing the potential of 5-a-side soccer and the aspirations of budding athletes.

With daily training sessions and friendly matches against Pirates 5s, one of the continent’s premier 5-a-side teams, the squad is cultivating both skill and camaraderie.

The team’s captain, Claudio Lorenzani, shared their mindset for the tournament. “We have big games and a tough group ahead of us. We are looking for maximum points against Hungary and Tunisia, and we know that the matchups against Croatia and Argentina will be tough, but we believe in our preparation and readiness to face these challenges.”

Emphasising a transition style of play that prioritises defensive patience and explosive counterattacks, the team aims to utilize its flair and creativity to navigate through formidable opponents.

“It’s many of our players’ second world cup, or second major tournament, so, we know what to expect, and nerves won’t be an issue,” the captain stated confidently.

But this tournament is about more than just the games; it’s about creating awareness and opportunities for those who dare to dream in the world of 5-a-side soccer. Lorenzani passionately expressed, “We wish to create a bigger awareness, that there is also opportunity, in the 5-a-side game, for players to grow and travel.

“Just last month, we were in Greece for the Champions League. Players can get paid to play 5-a-side, and there are so many opportunities for young talent, should they wish to pursue this path.”

Support from local organisations has been critical in this journey. The squad trains at XP, which has recently upgraded its beautiful facilities. “It’s fitting that they now have the national Socca team using it to prepare for the World Cup.”

A massive shout-out was made to sponsors Flight Centre RSA and WWise, both of whom have generously backed the team. “We can’t wait to represent their brands, both on and off the field,” said Lorenzani.
