Alcatraz Club swimmers celebrate raking in 46 medals and counting

The Alcatraz Swim Club has been making a splash in the swimming world for years.

With the help of their dedicated team of four expert coaches, swimmers in the junior and senior/elite squads train relentlessly throughout the year, pushing boundaries during early morning and evening sessions.

This year has been particularly phenomenal for Alcatraz swimmers, with the club recently competing in the prestigious Gauteng Regional Galas. The four-day event brought together swimmers from across the province, as well as teams from Botswana and Namibia, for a high-octane competition.

“We’ve had an incredible year, and the commitment from everyone has been nothing short of inspiring,” said head coach Jason Sfetsios.

“We’re determined to keep the momentum going and continue this success.”

The results were nothing short of spectacular, with 30 Alcatraz swimmers competing across the three levels and earning an incredible 46 medals. Many of the swimmers secured podium finishes and claimed their place among the best, with two Alcatraz swimmers earning the prestigious opportunity to compete at the Junior Nationals.

As the season reaches its peak, the club’s senior swimmers are preparing for the final gala of the year – the highly anticipated Junior Nationals in Cape Town in April. The entire Alcatraz community is behind their swimmers, wishing them the best of luck in their pursuit of greatness.

The club’s success is not just about the medals and accolades; it’s about the community, growth, and memories that last a lifetime.

Jackie van Niekerk, a proud parent of a Level 2 swimmer, said, “The gala wasn’t just about competition. It was about building friendships, supporting each other, drying tears, learning, and, most importantly, having fun.”

With their sights set on the Junior Nationals, the club is more than ready to continue making waves in the swimming world. Sfetsios said, “We’re determined to keep the momentum going and continue this success.
