Veteran Fourways strength athlete Gary Katzen has added two world titles to his impressive sports record, solidifying his position as one of South Africa’s top power athletes.

With more than 20 years of competitive experience, Katzen’s career is marked by a unique level of versatility and longevity. He has become a national champion in four different strength sports: Bodybuilding, powerlifting, arm wrestling, and strict arm and freestanding curl.
He is also a Commonwealth Bench Press Champion and a multiple Arnold Classic Africa Strict Arm Curl Champion, ranking him among the most decorated athletes in South African strength sports.
Winning two world titles, Katzen reflected that it was the result of years of persistence, discipline, and sacrifice finally coming full circle.
Securing both victories in South Africa made the experience even more meaningful. “Being part of the first event of its kind in South Africa, in front of local supporters and fellow athletes, created a truly historic atmosphere. To compete and win here felt like a dream. It’s something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

The championships attracted top athletes from around the globe, creating a competitive and energetic atmosphere that enhanced the entire event.
Katzen added that the international participation motivated him to perform at his best, highlighting the importance of South Africa hosting such a prestigious championship. “It’s a tremendous source of pride. South Africa has great potential in strength sports, and this event showcased our passion and talent.

“Contributing to placing South Africa on the global strength-sport map is incredibly meaningful to me.”
He quickly acknowledged that his success was not his alone. Katzen credited his coaches, training partners, and family for their constant support throughout his athletic journey. “Their belief in me helped carry me through the toughest sessions and the biggest moments. A world title is never won alone.”
Even with two world titles under his belt, Katzen’s ambition remains strong. His goals now include defending his titles, setting new records, and promoting the growth of strict arm and freestanding curl, both locally and internationally.
To the next generation of strength athletes, his advice is: “Build discipline, stay consistent, focus on technique, and believe in yourself, long before anyone else does.”
