Amateur boxers go toe to toe in Lonehill

Local boxers take part in white-collar event at Lonehill pub.

White collar boxing returned at Lonehill’s Lock, Stock and Beer for 10 explosive matches from a mixed bag of boxers.

World Boxing Entertainment (WBE)’s 37th edition of white-collar boxing events saw fights that consisted of three two-round bouts. They also featured two competitive fights with boxers over the age of 35 called master box.
Event organiser, Stephen Castle said the venue was packed and filled with energy.

“For our first one of the year, we were very happy. Lots of interest was shown from an entry point,” he said.
Castle said the night’s prizes for fighter of the night and fight of the night were sponsored by Fourways Crossing’s Norman Goodfellows. The fighter of the night went to Rudolph Blom, and the fight of the night went to the bout between Dylan Mestre and Namibian boxer, Pieter Kotze.

The two master box fights had the crowd on its feet, with cheers that echoed throughout the venue. The two fights of the night were James Sey versus Claude Watkins and Zunaid Khan against Martin Steyn. Sey and Steyn were named winners from their respective fights.

Castle said that this is a first in the country where fighters over the age of 35 can once again take part in the sport and gain silverware from taking part competitively.

“Master box is still very new but very exciting. We hope to feature more and more of these fights. People love to see a fighter’s hand raised in victory,” he said.
