Menace will rely on experience to win next fight
Malawian boxer Denis 'The Menace' Mwale says experience will trump youth when he faces undefeated prospect Simnikiwe Bongco at Aquila Boxing Promotions’ Knockout Chaos 2 on July 25.
Denis ‘The Menace’ Mwale has vowed to deliver an explosive performance, as he returns to the Aquila Boxing Promotions ring on July 25 at The Galleria in Sandton.
The Malawian super welterweight, who will face rising South African Simnikiwe Bongco in a four-round bout, spoke passionately about his journey, the upcoming fight, and the challenges facing foreign boxers in South Africa. “I moved up here to look for greener pastures. Malawi is a small country with fewer opportunities, but you can’t just go straight away to what you want to do in life. I didn’t have any dream of fighting anyway, but it just happened that I got involved in boxing. The people who were my employers in the garden helped me to get where I am today.”

Mwale built a strong amateur foundation in South Africa, winning 14 of 15 bouts. His fight on July 25 will will mark his second appearance on an Aquila card. “I’m very grateful. I’m sure I was one of the first people to fight on their first show, when they hosted their first tournament in South Africa.”
On his opponent, Mwale said: “I’m not taking away anything from Simnikiwe. He has a good amateur background, but the difference, for me and him, is going to be experience. I have more experience than him. Actually, I fought better competition. For me, fighting in Russia three times and losing all of them, it’s not like I lost to bums. They were good opponents.

“I’m not going there to box, to show technique, or whatever. He’ll either knock me out, or I’m going to knock him out. That’s the only way I can win this fight. It’s time to make my name again.
“I want to thank Stephen Castle for all the opportunities he created for me. Also, there’s Winstel Technologies. They were my first sponsor. They helped me a lot. I have other sponsors as well, like Parbar and SNT Sports, who just jumped in now. They’re going to sponsor me for this fight, and they’re sponsoring me with the boxing gloves.”
Despite the tough journey, Mwale remains driven. “I’m a fighter. I was born a fighter, and I’m going to die a fighter. I’m not going to retire without being a champion.”
