Marc Lottering brings the house down

Nothing was off limits for Lottering as he joked about controversial issues such as the Oscar Pistorius trial, ebola and even poked fun at the government. Lottering’s two hour one man skit was full of impressions and antics, showcasing some stereotypical characters which all South Africans could recognise. Most of his jokes were based on individuals in Cape Town, much to the delight of some Capetonians in the audience.

In one of the skits, one of Lottering’s characters, aunty Merle finds herself at the airport departures hall, armed with a freshly baked tart for her friend Rose Kannemeyer, who’s off to visit family in Johannesburg. Pop idol wannabe Galatia Geduldt is on a plane off to Johannesburg to record her first demo after meeting a producer in a take-away in the Bo-Kaap. Pastor Brandon is taking a short break from the church, and leaving for the States after a tabloid newspaper publishes a story about him and his “laying on of hands” approach as witnessed in a parked car at Sunrise Circle in Muizenberg. Smiley the taxi gaartjie (conducter) and everyone’s favourite cashier Colleen also makes an appearance.

The audience howled and laughed through Lottering’s performances. Media personalities Devi Sankaree Govender and Jeremy Mansfield were also spotted in the audience.

Lottering’s side splitting show will be showing at the theatre from 15 October-9 November.
