Laugh till you drop, with Alfred Adriaan

DAINFERN - Funny man and Dainfern resident Alfred Adriaan will soon take the comedy stage by storm.

Represented by the comical duo Goliath and Goliath, Adriaan and four other cracking comedians, including Richelieu Beaunoir, Donovan Goliath and Nicholas Goliath, will host a new show called Aweh Mzansi.

Adriaan sat down with Fourways Review and gave a candid interview about his life and his side-splitting jokes.

Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, Adriaan was brought up in a seemingly normal Afrikaans home. His journey to the comedy stage was inspired at a young age. “I was the family entertainer, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I was good at making people laugh and I knew how to do it.”

Despite being a marketing executive by profession, Adriaan manages to balance his career and his passion for the comedic stage. “I love comedy, I do it for fun, to make people laugh. If I can make at least one person laugh at my jokes then I have achieved my goals,” he said.

When asked where he gets his inspiration for his material, he replied that everyday life is one of his biggest influences. “I don’t go looking for things to talk about, I just live my life and get inspired by life, relationships, family, politics, movies and even the window washer on the side of the road,” he said.

He explained the difficulties of breaking into the industry, how being different and unique among well-known and respected comedians in the industry came as a challenge for him. However, through many failed attempts he finally got his lucky break.

He said, “Comedy has a way of humbling you, just when you think you have made it, something or someone will bring you back down to reality. It’s what keeps this industry going, new talents are always coming in.”

Adriaan believes new and up-and-coming comedians need to be themselves, stay true to their personality and must not let anyone influence their funniness.

Adriaan and his comedic group will record a DVD titled Aweh Mzansi at the Lyric Theatre on 2 April. Tickets are available and can be booked in advance. The show is set to be a ruckus of a time according to Adriaan. Tickets cost R120.
