Kwa-Baba actor, Vuyo Biyela, opens up about family, fatherhood on new Mzansi Magic role

Known for playing tough characters, Vuyo Biyela is taking on a different challenge. The actor shares how family values, culture and personal loss helped him connect with his newest role.

Actor Vuyo Biyela is stepping into a role that is worlds apart from some of the characters audiences have come to know him for.

While many viewers may recognise him for playing tough and intimidating characters, especially on The River, his latest role showcases a man guided by family values, culture and principle.

Speaking during the launch of the new show on Mzansi Magic called Kwa-Baba, Biyela described his character, Zwelakhe Mkhize, as someone who places family at the centre of everything he does.

“Zwelakhe is a family man. He’s strict and believes that if he wants to succeed, he has to stay true to his values.”

The role marks a significant departure from some of the actor’s previous work. Biyela explained that, unlike the gangster characters he has portrayed in the past, Mkhize is a good man who believes in strong family structures and has deep respect for his cultural roots.

“He’s very different. He believes in family, in doing things the right way and respecting where he comes from.”

He said preparing for the role required more than simply learning lines. He drew from his own life experiences, particularly his journey growing up without a father.

“My father passed away when I was very young. There are similarities between my experience and what this character goes through. Growing up without a father leaves you with questions.

“Even today, I ask myself if my father is looking down on me and saying he’s proud of the person I’ve become. Those emotions helped me connect with the character on a deeper level.”

The actor’s candid reflection offered a glimpse into the personal experiences that continue to shape his work and the authenticity he brings to each role.

Away from the screen, Biyela also turned heads with his stylish appearance at the event. When asked about his outfit, he revealed that the suit had been tucked away in his wardrobe for years.

“Honestly, it’s been sitting in my wardrobe, and I haven’t worn it in a long time. When I heard about the event, I felt it was the perfect occasion to bring it out again.”

The classic look proved to be a fitting choice for the evening, as Biyela celebrated both his work and the journey that has brought him to this point.
