Mayor of Ekurhuleni urged to step down

The DA urges the Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina to honour his word.

The Ekurhuleni mayor and ANC regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina found himself in hot water following the election of Cyril Ramaphosa as the new ANC president.

Masina, who is allegedly a staunch supporter of President Jacob Zuma, was in full support of Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma during the election of the new ANC president.

He was quoted in a number of newspapers saying he would resign as mayor and remain an ordinary member of the ANC and as councillor if Ramaphosa won.

In the build-up to the ANC elective conference in Nasrec, Masina, a vocal Dlamini Zuma supporter, insinuated that Ramaphosa was exclusively a white people’s candidate.

“If Nkosazana loses, white people will lead SA.

“I will not be a part of it.

“I will not be mayor of Ekurhuleni, but I will leave the ANC in power,” said Masina

The DA were quick to remind Masina of the statements he made about resigning when Ramaposa emerged victorious.

Initially he denied his previous statements, however, the DA urges him to honour his word and proceed with stepping down.

“It is this kind of rhetoric that has marked Masina’s stint as mayor and indicative of his policies to enrich a certain few in power while largely neglecting the needs of the people in the metro.

“In short, he has never had the interests of the residents of Ekurhuleni at heart, but has rather backed the Zuma political faction to fulfil his own political ambition,” said the DA.

The DA also added they believed in delivering on service delivery needs and inclusive growth for all within Ekurhuleni.
