Update: Community urged to come forward with information to help arrest criminals

Police are investigating a double murder, business robbery and hijackings.

The Elsburg police are investigating cases of business robbery, murder and hijackings after an incident which occurred at about 4.40pm at a local supermarket on the corner of Heidelberg and R554 roads, on Saturday.

“An employee at the supermarket alleges that one armed suspect, who was pointing a firearm, approached him and demanded the safe keys,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“As he was telling the suspect that he didn’t have the safe keys, one of the customers, who was wearing an SBV uniform, seconded the employee by responding to the suspect and the suspect shot the victim several times in the upper body.

“Another female customer, who was next to the security officer, was also shot in the upper body.

“Both victims were certified dead on the scene.”

The 12 suspects managed to steal undisclosed amounts of money from the tills on their way out.

Two of the armed suspects then hijacked a VW Polo Vivo and another two armed suspects hijacked a Renault and they fled the scene.

The victims in both motor vehicles (two adults and an infant in the Vivo and two adults in the Renault) were left lying on the ground unharmed.

“Eight empty cartridges were found inside the shop and the suspects are still at large,” said Phooko.

The Elsburg police are appealing to the community to come forward with any information which could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
