Masego explores her love of poetry

Masego Nkuna puts pen to paper and releases first poetry book.

It has been two years since Masego Nkuna (27) moved to Germiston and she has blossomed from a small town girl to a self-published author.

Masego, originally from the small town of Seabe in Mpumalanga, recently released her first poetry book, Narrated in Me.

She visited the GCN on Thursday to share her journey as an author.

Masego started writing the poems for her book in 2017 after being inspired by her friend Jacqueline Matjila.

“My friend, who is a poet, knew I enjoyed writing poetry but kept it to myself.

“She asked me to start working on a poetry book with her and I thought why not?

“However, we were later advised to part ways as many friendships have been ruined by book collaborations.”

The pair heeded the advice, but never stopped helping and supporting each other.

“If I got a contact or idea I thought could help her I passed it on and she would do the same for me,” Masego explained.

When asked where she draws her inspiration from she explained, “I draw inspiration from daily life, personal experiences and the lives of those around me.

“I also draw inspiration from critical issues, like abuse or human rights.

“I take my time writing. A topic or experience needs to speak to me before I can write – I cannot force it.”

Self-publishing was a great option for Masego as she was in control of the process and it allowed her a chance to explore all the aspects of releasing a book from writing to release and opened her eyes to opportunities she never gave much thought to.

“I hope to one day open my own publishing company,” she said.

“Through self-publishing, I was able to really get involved in each step of the publishing process, which I think will help me in the future.”

Masego, who currently works at a sweets factory after finishing her studies in food technology, hopes her readers will be able to relate to her poems.

“If someone can relate to my words and find healing within them that would be fantastic,” she said.

Masego is supported by her family who cannot believe how far she has come.

When asked about her plans for the future and if more books are on the cards, Masego said, “I plan to release more books, but not anytime soon.

“At the moment I am focusing on Narrated in Me, my career, charity work and other projects.”
