DEMS spreads cheer on Mandela Day
DEMS staff members spread joy and cheer on Mandela Day at three organisations.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) went all out to change and touch lives at three different organisations across Ekurhuleni as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day.
Without compromising service delivery, the subsections of public information education and relations (PIER), disaster management and support services, all dedicated their 67 minutes by giving food, clothes and other humanitarian aid to Tsakane Old Age Home in Tsakane, Sunshine Centre Association in Elsburg and the Bonolo Pelo Elderly Club in the Motsamai old clinic in Katlehong.
Tsakane Old Age Home was given a revamp by the PIER team and emergency services logistic officials.
The teams installed escape route and safety signs, remounted fire extinguishers on the walls, replaced globes, cleaned the entire building and planted vegetable seeds to assist with feeding.
Support services and disaster management, accompanied by their head of department Sam Sibande, and four divisional heads started their journey at Sunshine Centre Association in Elsburg.
The centre cares for the disabled.
The centre manager and his staff members accepted donations of toys, blankets, winter hats, scarves and food for the association.

The team then visited Katlehong where they were met by songs of joy from a massive crowd of about 100 elders.
The leadership gave Gospel sermons in between the speeches.
Tears of joy rolled down the cheeks of the elderly as each one was given shoes, hats, winter scarves, and warm soup and bread to eat.
