Alleged killer of EWC Katlehong student arrested in Cape Town
He is expected to return to court again on December 6.
Katlehong North SAPS detective branch arrested the most wanted suspect for the murder of an Ekurhuleni West College student, Mbali Hlongwane.
The suspect was arrested on November 4 at Montague Gardens in Cape Town, after being on the run for more than a year.
He allegedly killed Hlongwane, a fellow classmate, by stabbing her five times on October 21, 2021, next to EWC College in Katlehong North.
During this month last year and two weeks after she was murdered, frustrated EWC students, community members and the Hlongwane family marched to the Katlehong North SAPS demanding the police arrest Mbali’s killer.
According to Katlehong North SAPS media liaison officer Sergeant Sbusiso Mazibuko, an intelligence-driven operation by Katlehong North detectives led them to Cape Town where they managed to nab the suspect.
He said it is believed that the suspect had already secured employment in one of the big companies.
“He was transported back to Katlehong North to face charges of murder.”
Mazibuko said the suspect appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate Court on November 7 to face charges of murder. He was denied bail and will return to court again on December 6.
The acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Johan Botha applauded the members who were involved in the long investigation and further sent a message to the criminals, noting that they can run but not hide.
