Ubuhle Athletics Club shows its strength
Ubuhle Athletics Club (UAC) athletes excelled at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) games in Potchefstroom and South African Schools Athletics (SASA) games in Kimberley recently.
The UAC was formed in 2010 and began participating in competitive events in 2011.
According to the club’s assistant coach, Ngoako Mashika, the athletes have been doing well ever since then.
“Some of them have received scholarships to study at some of the best schools in this country because of their talents,” said Mashika.
Nobuhle Tshabalala and Bongeka Magubane received scholarships in 2012 to study at Queens High School in Eastgate.
Odwa Zibe, Olga Kamakwakwa, Sipho Mabulwane and Siyabonga Mokgothu received scholarships to study at Tuks High School in Pretoria and are going to further their education at the University of Pretoria (Tuks).
Mashika said in 2013 Magubane represented the club in National Second Field in Bloemfontein and got position two.
“Mahlatsi Ngwenya also represented the club successfully in 2016 – on September 9 in the ASA Cross-Country Challenge and on September 30 in the SASA Cross-Country Challenge. She got position one in both competitions.
“Njabulo Hlatshwayo got position one in the boys’ u-10 category during the SASA Cross-Country Challenge in Kimberley on September 30.
“Magubane also represented our girls’ senior teams in the SASA Cross-Country Challenge in Kimberley in both the u-18 and u-19 and got position two in both categories.
“Mbuso Buthelezi and Lesego Tapane both got position three in their different categories,” said Mashika.
Mashika said they still need more children from Kathorus areas to come and join the club.
“We believe we still have a lot to offer the community of Kathorus. We can make their children the best athletes, like Magubane, who stands a good chance of representing South Africa in Thailand next year, as she did well in Potchefstroom and Kimberley in the ASA and SASA Cross-Country Challenge.
“Parents must not worry about their children’s training fees – training is for free,” said Mashika.
UAC athletes train at the Sam Ntuli Sports Complex.
