Doing it for the 29th time
Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC) participated in its 36th Comrades Marathon on Sunday, June 10.
KAC took 25 members to the marathon and only three of them did not finish the race.
Hloni Motloung, the KAC chairman said the three sustained injuries in the first half of the race. “That is why they did not finish the race,” said Motloung.
During the down run from Pietermaritzburg to the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, the 60-year-old Isaac Mabula was running his 29th Comrades Marathon since the formation of KAC in 1982.
His finishing time was 10:55:02.
Motloung said it felt good to see an old man like him finishing ahead of the young stars.
Mabula has participated in most marathons since KAC started to take part.
He said: “KAC performed well at the 2018 Comrades Marathon down run from Pietermaritzburg to the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. This year, the team had three novice runners, namely Mamokete Masilo, Lizo Siko and Robert Piernaar who all managed to cross the finish line. The first athlete to finish was Petros Mosea – in seven hours. The runners will take a month’s rest to recover,” said Motloung.
The 2019 entries will be opened in September 2018 and more members are expected to join in this race.
