Ellis Park Tennis Tournament held
The Ellis Park Tennis Tournament was held at Ellis Park Tennis Court in Soweto.
About 60 young tennis players took part in this year’s tournament.
The three-day national event started on June 15 and ended on June 17.
Players from the age of eight to 14 years played in the mini-league (point form) called Round Robin, while those above 14 years played in the knock-outs games called Best-of-Three Sets.
Seven players from the Vosloorus Cricket Club – Nkosikhona Lubisi (11), Sanele Paul (16), Mphile Kubheka (16), Thulani Mthombeni (16), Kgomotso Mabote (15), Kgomotso santos (15) and Katleho Madoda (14) took part in the tournament.
According to Michael Lelosa, the Vosloorus Tennis Club coach, the players have shown competitiveness.
“The players are doing well when given an opportunity to take part in competitions. They do not disappoint in both singles and doubles. Personally, I am very proud of how they performed during the tournament,” said Lelosa.
He said his players, both boys and girls, are showing potential.
Nkosikhona Ubisi got a third position for the boys u-12. Sanele Saul and Thulani Mthombeni participated in the boys u-16 singles where both were defeated in the quarter finals.
In the females, u-16 singles saw Mphile Kubheka lose her game in the quarter finals while Kgomotso Mabote and Kgomotso Santos lost in the semi-finals. Katleho Madoda won the u-16 category.
Sanele Saul won the doubles in the u-16 category while Katleho Madoda lost in the finals.
“What discourages us is the fact that we do not have enough money to participate in the competitions. If we can get sponsors that can take care of our travelling and also pay for our entry in the competition, our team will go a very long way,” said Lelosa.
