A week for lovers of science

Moipone Academy will be hosting a National Science Week (NSW) in Ekurhuleni as from July 30 until August 4.

NSW, an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), is a countrywide celebration of science involving various stakeholders or role players conducting science-based activities during the week.

NSW is run in all nine provinces simultaneously at multiple sites per province.

The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) has been appointed by the DST as the implementing agency and to conduct the role of the national project manager.

The NSW 2018 national launch event will be hosted by the University of Mpumalanga in Nelspruit on July 28.

“Each year a different theme is chosen and activities are offered around the theme to the target audiences. ‘Deepening our Democracy Through Science’ is the theme for 2018,” said Joseph Taetsane, Moipone Academy centre manager.

He added that Moipone Academy is one of the science centres that was chosen by the DST to host this event for the whole of Ekhurhuleni.

“We would like to inform the community from Kathorus that Moipone Academy will be hosting a Science Week in Thokoza Hall on August 2 from 1pm until 5pm.

“Our aim as a science centre is to encourage the youth to pursue careers in science and also to learn more about science. Even the community of Ekhurhuleni needs to know that science is a career that can be chosen by anyone,” Taetsane said.

He also mentioned that on that day they will have professors and doctors from different fields of science to come and motivate the community members and the youth.

The venues and dates of the entire event are:

• Sam Hlalele Hall in Tembisa on July 30.

• Moipone Science in Tembisa on July 30.

• Outreach to School in Ivory Park on July 31.

• Outreach to school in Ivory Park on August 1.

• DH Williams Hall in Katlehong on August 1.

• Thokoza Youth Hall on August 2.

• Daveyton Community Hall on August 3.
