Breast cancer awareness is a topic at Elsburg clinic

Libalele Health and Social Welfare Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Elsburg Clinic.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Libalele Health and Social Welfare hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign at Elsburg Clinic on October 23.

The initiative aimed to educate community members about breast cancer, promote early detection, and encourage support for individuals and families affected by the disease.

Held under the theme ‘Raising Awareness, Encouraging Early Detection and Supporting Those Affected by Breast Cancer’, the campaign brought together organisation representatives and community members to share information about breast health and access to healthcare services.

Breast cancer is a disease that develops when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. While it can affect anyone, it is important for everyone to understand the warning signs and know when to seek medical assistance.

During the campaign, the importance of recognising possible early signs was highlighted. These may include a new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, changes to the nipple, or unusual nipple discharge.

Community members were encouraged to become familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and to seek medical assessment if they notice any unusual changes. Although not every change indicates cancer, possible warning signs should not be ignored.

The campaign emphasised that early detection and timely medical care can improve the chances of successful treatment. While breast self-awareness is important, it should not replace professional medical examinations or recommended screening methods. Individuals were encouraged to speak to a healthcare professional about appropriate screening based on their age, medical history and risk factors.

Beyond sharing information about the disease, the campaign highlighted the importance of breaking the silence surrounding breast cancer. Fear, misinformation, stigma and limited knowledge can prevent people from seeking medical attention.

Libalele Health and Social Welfare encouraged community members to share accurate information and create an environment where people feel comfortable seeking help.

“Breast cancer affects more than the individual diagnosed. It can also affect families, caregivers and loved ones emotionally, socially and financially,” said Managing Director Nonhlanhla Innocencia Dube.

“Supporting someone diagnosed with breast cancer requires patience, understanding and empathy. Practical ways to provide support include listening without judgment, accompanying someone to medical appointments, assisting with daily responsibilities, respecting their privacy and offering emotional encouragement throughout treatment and recovery,” said Dube.

The organisation stressed the importance of avoiding unverified information or making assumptions about a person’s experience, as every individual’s journey is different.

Libalele Health and Social Welfare said it remains committed to supporting awareness initiatives that empower communities with knowledge, encourage preventative healthcare and foster environments where individuals affected by illness are treated with dignity and compassion.

Libalele Health and Social Welfare is committed to promoting the health, well-being and social development of communities through awareness campaigns, outreach programmes and health education.
