Blind woman knocked over

An alleged drunken driver knocked over and seriously injured a blind woman.

On Saturday, August 3, an elderly blind woman was knocked down by an allegedly intoxicated driver.

The accident happened at 1.24pm, at the corner of Olivier and Van der Merwe roads, in Elsburg.

“A maroon Opel Kadett, driven by an allegedly intoxicated 47-year-old man, with three minor passengers, knocked over a blind 73-year-old female pedestrian while she was walking with her guide dog,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, the media liaison officer for the EMPD.

“The dog was unscathed, but the pedestrian had to be rushed to Union Hospital, in Alberton, with serious injuries.”

The driver, who didn’t sustain any visible injuries, was taken to the Elsburg Police Station and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, and reckless and negligent driving.

“It is not clear at this stage what actually occurred before the accident, but our Accident Reconstruction Unit will investigate the cause,” said Mokheseng.

The Elsburg SAPS are continuing to investigate the case.
