Some of the injured commuters from train 0610 which derailed on Friday near the Elandsfontein Railway Station have been discharged from hospital.
Eleven commuters were discharged from hospital later that same day and five were still under observation and were expected to be discharged soon, except for the two commuters who were in a serious condition.
Metrorail offered its sympathy to the injured commuters and their families.
“Safety of all commuters and employees is taken very seriously and is our number one priority,” said Mosenngwa Mofi, CEO Prasa (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) Rail Operations.
“The incident is regrettable and one in our view is too many.
“We have prioritised giving care to the commuters and employees who were on the train.
“We wish them a speedy recovery.
“The cause of the accident is not known at this moment; a board of enquiry will be instituted to investigate the root cause of the incident and the circumstances around it.
“The estimated cost of damages is R1-million.”
The affected lines were opened later on Friday, after they had been cleared.
