Sewage flows into Elsburg Spruit

Resident upset about spruit pollution.

Concerned resident Johan Coertze is upset about the state of the Elsburg Spruit.

“The pollution in the spruit is out of hand,” he said.

“Almost every stream that joins the Elsburg Spruit in Tedstoneville is polluted, and it appears that sewage is being pumped into the stream, which then joins the Klip River and runs to the Vaal River.”

Coertze told the GCN that the pollution has been going on for a number of years, but that lately it has got worse and the stench of the sewerage is awful.

The GCN asked the metro for comment on the matter and Themba Gadebe, from the department of communications and brand management, said: “The stench and sewage spill is being caused by a burst 1 200mm diameter pipe on the sewer line to the Vosloorus Waste Water Purification Plant.

“The contractor is on site attending to the leak, and it’s expected that it will be fixed by the end of the week.”

He added that, currently, there is a high content of e-coli and sulphides in the spruit, due to the burst pipe, but as soon as the repair is complete the metro will rehabilitate the spruit.
