Road of sewage

Raw sewage has been causing problems for Wadeville businesses.

Would you like to wade through raw sewage to get to work every day, or when you visit a company with which you want to conduct business?

This is what businesses in Barracuda and Bream streets, in Wadeville, have been contending with on a regular basis.

Wilfred Kohl, from Panic Packaging, contacted the GCN to tell us about a manhole that had been leaking raw sewage into the street since last Friday.

“This is about the fourth time this year that this has happened,” Kohl said.

“Although I usually manage to get hold of the metro and they come out and fix the problem quickly, this time I have not managed to get through to the call taking centre to report the matter.”

Kohl thinks that fat or oil is being dumped into the system by someone in the area and that this is causing the blockage.

“The front door to my business is close to the manhole and clients and staff have to wade through the sewage to get into the business,” he said.

“We also have to drive through it every day and it smells awful and is a health risk.”

The GCN contacted the metro for comment on the matter and the department of communications and brand management said: “The problem was attended to on Thursday.

“The blockage was caused by fat, sand and debris in the line.

“Problems in the sewer reticulation will be less if users use the sewer system for sewage only, and not as a general disposal system.”
