Brothers died only weeks apart

Boet de Bruyn dies at the age of 70.

Hendrik “Boet” de Bruyn has died, only weeks after the death of his brother, Gerrie.

De Bruyn died at the age of 70, in Primrose, on Wednesday, April 1; he had been ill for some time.

De Bruyn was born in Primrose on January 17, 1944 and, like his brother, became interested in boxing from a young age.

After a short amateur career, he turned professional in 1964 when he beat Tickey Azor on points, in a four-round fight.

He never won a national title, but fought six SA champions, losing to them all, except one.

He drew in a six-round match against middleweight Chris van Rooyen, in June, 1965.

Among the SA champions he fought were Evie Vorster, Johnny Wood, Pierre Fourie, Japie Pretorius and Jan Kies.

One of de Bruyn’s well documented matches was fought against Fourie, one of the best boxers in SA history.

De Bruyn faced him a total of three times; he was stopped in one and lost the other two on points.

Known as a busy, come-forward fighter, and though he lost more fights than he won, he is known for beating capable fighters such as Wynand Saunders and Mike Robertson.

He concluded his career with a record of 8-14-2, including 2 wins inside the distance.

De Bruyn’s remaining family members are desperately looking for his son, who de Bruyn has not seen for years.
