Angela Guerreiro, a new resident in the Primrose Hill area, recently brought a strange occurrence taking place in the area to the GCN’s attention (see GCN, July 11).
“I have noticed that, at least once a month, the gutters/storm water drains smoke,” she said.
“I have spoken to several people in the area and no one seems to know what could be causing the smoke.”
Other residents in the area have speculated that it might be homeless people trying to keep warm by means of a mini fire.
Since the publication of this article the metro has responded to our requests for comment.
“The smoke that is coming out of catch pits is caused by the temperature difference between the water that might be in the catch pit and the atmosphere,” said Themba Gadebe, from the metro’s department of communications and brand management.
“The water temperature is higher than atmosphere temperature; this is common during winter months.
“This is similar to the mist (smoke) that a person can see on dams and water bodies during winter months.”
