Four men and a woman, suspected of being linked to a string of robberies, murder and hijackings, were arrested by EMPD officers, last Monday at 6am, in Katlehong.
A stolen firearm, a toy gun resembling the real thing, three stolen vehicles, 24 cellphones, several bank cards and wallets were recovered by EMPD Community Liaison Unit members.
“After receiving a tip-off, Metro Police officers kept the men under surveillance for five long days, so as to check on the activities they were engage in, as well as their movements,” said EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago.
“The staking out of the suspects’ residences in Katlehong commenced on Wednesday, last week, and the officers decided to pounce at around 6am on September 22 – two of the men were apprehended in Phooko section — one of them with a girlfriend — and another two in Phadima section.”
Since reliable information received points to the four men working together in committing crimes, they were all charged with possession of a stolen 9mm CZ75 pistol and ammunition, as well as possession of three motor vehicles.
The Toyota Corolla, Toyota Conquest and the VW Golf 5 were hijacked in Springs, Benoni and Meyerton, respectively.
The Toyotas were taken in August and the Golf on September 7.
The charges were registered at the Katlehong North Police Station.
In-depth investigations are underway to verify the four men’s involvement in a string of crimes committed recently in Ekurhuleni.
They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court soon.
