How can the metro water their gardens, while residents have no water?

Outrage as metro employees continue to water plants at Howe Circle.

With the water crisis still in full swing in some areas of Germiston, the GCN received word that metro workers have been watering the garden at Howe Circle.

A resident, who wishes to remain unnamed, explained what she saw: “What a shock I got on Friday, at Howe Circle in Sunnyridge.

“I could not believe my eyes when I saw a municipality employee standing there with a tractor with a water tank with a pump watering the flowers with a hosepipe.

“That while we have to go and stand in a queue to fill a few buckets and bottles.

“We do not get answers and are still not sure what caused the problem and how long it will last.

“During the week I stood for an hour in a queue waiting my turn to fill my buckets and when I got to the front I was informed that the water supply tank was empty.

“On questioning when will the tanker be back we were informed that it would only be back in the next hour to an hour-and-a-half.

“Now I ask myself after seeing this watering of the plants who is more important to the metro, their flowers or the residents of our town?

“Since I saw this watering of the plants on Friday afternoon I am way beyond myself, I feel depressed and down.

“Here I struggle without water, for seven days now, I have to run around with empty bottles and buckets to get it filled and plan on the correct way of using the little water I have and our local municipality is watering the flowers with no concern about their residents.

“I feel our local municipality could rather look after the old and sick people in the community in such a serious event and assist them in obtaining water as is it is very difficult for them to carry buckets and bottles of water than watering flowers.

“Watering flowers at Howe Circle is not going to solve the shortage of water in Primrose, Sunnyridge, Homestead and Gerdview,” she concluded.

The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation yesterday held an urgent meeting with Rand Water to understand and find solutions to the continuing water shortages in the Gauteng.

It was felt that this meeting was a necessity with the growing discontent among residents.

The GCN has since approached Malatswa Molepo, of the parliamentary communication service, for any feedback this meeting.

At the time of going to press no comment had been received.
