André van Zijl has done it!
The multi-record holder van Zijl, who entered the Lebombo on Wedenday, November 26, was thrilled to step-out of the plane on Saturday, December 6, having completed his latest record.
Van Zijl shared the plans for his latest record attempt with the GCN (see GCN, December 5).
He managed survived an impressive 10 days and three hours in the Lebombo, the first Boeing 747 to arrive in the country, which can be found at the SAA Museum at Rand Airport, convincingly beating the old record of four days and three hours.
Van Zijl hoped his stay on the Lebombo would raise both awareness and funds for three chosen charities: the St Francis Care Centre, in Boksburg, and the SAA Orange Tail.
St Francis cares for a number of HIV-positive babies, children and adults, while the SAA Orange Tail focuses on SAA pensioners and helps to support ex-SAA employees.
The ambitious van Zijl was also part of two additional record attempts during his stay.
The first saw him trying to host the longest Skype chat as part of Worlds Aids Day and the second saw local radio station, East Rand Stereo, who broadcast live from the SAA Museum.
The station attempted to add to the record attempts by broadcasting live for 10 hours from inside the same plane van Zijl called home.
Van Zijl thanked everyone who was involved and showed their support.
The question now: what will he attempt next?
