EMPD officers in Germiston and Katlehong had a busy festive season.
Apart from dealing with accidents in the area, they also made a number of arrests and recovered hijacked vehicles.
According to Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD, 30 accidents were recorded in Germiston and 18 in Katlehong over this period.
Accident fatalities were as follows:
- On December 5 at 7.15am at the intersection of Rondebult and Karatamela streets, a pedestrian was killedwhen being run over by the driver of a sedan.
- At 9.48am on December 10, on Masakhane Road in Katlehong, a pedestrian walking on the pavement was fatally injured when the driver of a vehicle knocked her down.
- A pedestrian was knocked down and killed by the driver of a sedan at 4.20pm on December 15, at the corner of Shamrock and Main Reef roads in Primrose.
- On December 19, a pedestrian was run over on the R103, between the Barry Marais and Leondale off-ramps to the N3.
- A pedestrian was run over by the driver of a truck on December 22, on the N3 North, near the Heidelberg Road off-ramp, at about 10.55am.
- Also on December 22, at 3.43pm, a pedestrian was run over by the driver of a truck at the intersection of Kaunda and 33rd streets, in Zonkezizwe.
- At 11.55am on December 29, at the intersection of Johan Rissik and Victoria streets, in Germiston, a drunk driver ran over a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement.
- On December 30, on the N3 North, between Leondale and Heidelberg roads, a passenger in a vehicle, who was relieving herself at the side of the road, was killed in a hit-and-run at 3.22am.
EMPD officers made the following arrests and recorded a number of other successes over the festive season:
- Six drivers landed behind bars in Germiston, and 27 in Katlehong, for driving under the influence of alcohol.
- Six speedsters were arrested in Elsburg.
- A total of three vehicles were discontinued – two in Germiston and one in Katlehong.
- Seven complaints were attended to in Germiston and three in Katlehong.
- Four funeral escorts were undertaken in Germiston and 11 in Katlehong.
- EMPD Peace Corps members confiscated illegal cigarettes, counterfeit DVDs, clothing and caps in Katlehong and arrested four suspects for assaulting officers.
- Two male suspects were arrested in possession of 40 packets of crystal meth and 80 packets of CAT, valued at R6 000, in Tedstoneville.
- Two hijacked vehicles were recovered in Credi section, Katlehong, by the combined forces of the EMPD and Gauteng traffic police.
- A total of 101 fines were issued in Germiston and 25 in Katlehong for various traffic offences.
