The metro’s Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele will this morning (Wednesday) host the annual Academic Excellence Awards which will be held at Emperors Palace.
The theme for this year’s awards is “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers” and will see the metro’s top achievers reap the rewards of their sleepless nights, hard work and dedication.
The top achiever will be presented with bursaries for the 2015 academic year from both the Community Bursary Fund and the Executive Mayor’s tertiary Assistance Fund.
“The financial empowerment is the metro’s way of building bridges that will equip students to break the barriers of poverty, unemployment and lack of funds that prevent the youth from unleashing their full potential,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro.
The ceremony will begin with an interactive breakfast where the top achievers will have the opportunity to share their matric journey with the mayor and their peers.
As part of the ceremony the best performing schools and most improved priority schools in each district will be acknowledged.
