The Germiston SPCA is having problems with its telephone lines, since its switchboard was recently struck by lightning.
“When people call it sounds like the phone is ringing, but as we have only one working line now, the phone is actually engaged and is not ringing on our side,” said Michelle Falgate, chairman of the society.
“This is causing many problems for both people and animals in emergency situations.”
The SPCA has managed to secure some donations of cellphones and has also set up some alternate lines for people to call.

The Germiston SPCA is situated at 12 Junction Road, Driehoek.
The society also has 24-hour drop-off kennels in which any abandoned or stray animals can be kept safely until the morning.
These kennels can be found in the SPCA’s front garden.
