Unmarked truck may have been dumping waste in park
Report dumping in your area.
The GCN received a call from Esmé Enslin, who reported that, while on her morning commute, she had noticed something very strange.
As she was passing a park, close to the corner of Dunkirk and Elsburg roads, in Elsburg, she noticed a large unmarked truck, with a large green tank on its trailer, with a hose stuck into a nearby drain.
She was not able to see if this truck was pumping something out of the drain or dumping something into it.
The GCN contacted the metro to find out if there was record of a truck in the area cleaning the drains.
Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro responded to the GCN’s queries with the following statement: “EMM officials could not trace the product that was dumped into the sewer line.
“However, residents are encouraged to apply through their Customer Care Centre’s Department of Water and Sanitation for discharge of sewer effluent.
“In the meantime, we have dedicated points nominated for discharge of sewer effluents for all sewer effluents that is extracted from the chemical toilets at informal settlements.
“EMM wishes to advise the public at large that the discharge of foreign objects or effluents that are not meant to be discharged into sewer reticulation can affect the maintenance of the infrastructure and negatively affect the bio-remedial processes at the waste water treatment plant.
“Therefore encourage people to report such incidents and have detailed information so that fines can be imposed through the water quality division.”
