Colin Mann finishes second

Colin Mann Primary School made it to the Gauteng finals of the Let's Play Physical Education Challenge.

Colin Mann Primary was among the schools that made it to the semi-finals of the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge.

Also in the semi-finals were Benoni’s Farrarmere Primary School and Rivonia Primary School.

The three schools beat almost 100 competitors from across the province in a range of exercises that were standardised among the 500 primary schools that competed nationally.

The challenge was held simultaneously at the different schools on September 21.

The ultimate aim is to emerge as the fittest school in South Africa, to coincide with SuperSport’s Let’s Play brand’s celebration of its 10th birthday.

The inaugural challenge is targeted at Grade Four boys and girls and Active Education facilitates the course for Let’s Play.

“We have been partnered with Let’s Play for 10 years now and, among other things, we help to run this challenge and many other activities,” said Tebogo Makofane, a manager at Active Education.

“The semi-finals also served as the Gauteng finals and the winners are heading for the national finals, which will take place on November 5.”

The primary objective of the challenge, which was enthusiastically received across the country, is to reinforce the curriculum-oriented physical education and to promote physical activity in all primary schools.

“It’s been an extraordinary experience,” said Let’s Play’s Vaughn Bishop.

“The enthusiasm and energy of the children and their teachers proves that there is a great appetite for physical activity.

“What is more, the competitive spirit between the schools was very encouraging. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Let’s Play’s success after 10 fruitful years.”

Staff and peers at the local school cheered the participants throughout the challenge.

“It just goes to show that Colin Mann Primary School provides holistic education,” said Colin Mann Primary School’s principal, Marina Le Roux.

“Physical fitness is an important component in education.

“We are very proud of our children, they worked very hard and did well.

“Next year we will try even harder to win it.”

Rivonia Primary School placed third with 66 points, Colin Mann Primary School finished in second position with 68 points, just one point behind the Gauteng winners Farrarmere Primary School with 69 points.

The winning school, at the national finals, will receive an all-weather sport court from the Sports Trust, valued at R1.2 million.
