The metro warned residents of their plans for maintenance at the Chapman Road substation, in Germiston. The power supply to several areas was switched off from 6am to 6pm last Sunday.

Several areas in Germiston were again left without power on Wednesday. The outage was reportedly caused by the theft of a 33KV feeder cable.

An Elsburg family was left distraught after their three dogs were poisoned in the early hours of last Tuesday morning. The dogs, Dreamer, Smokie and Lulu, were poisoned at their Olivier Street, Elsburg, home, and the family’s garden furniture was stolen. Charné Redder told the GCN that when the family woke up they found all three dogs lying dead on the ground.

The charred bodies of two men were found with their hands bound inside a burnt-out tools container at a construction site in Kempton Park, recently. “Emergency services were called to the scene of a reported ‘house fire’,” said Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesman William Ntladi. On arrival at the scene, DEMS found it was not a house fire but a blaze at a construction site, where a huge tools container was on fire. The two bodies were found after the blaze was extinguished.

Five women were struck by a white Camry while walking on a footpath along the paved shoulder of Main Reef Road, in Boksburg, recently. Four of the women were catapulted into the air by the impact and died on the scene. The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital. It is believed the driver was travelling on the west-bound carriageway before he suddenly swerved to the right, to avoid hitting a group of people who were crossing the road.
