Five truck hijackers arrested

It was established that the suspects are from KwaZulu-Natal and hole themselves up in hostels in Katlehong and Tokoza.

Five men suspected of being involved in truck hijackings on the N3 freeway between Vosloorus and Heidelberg were apprehended at 10pm on Tuesday, 31 May on the N3 northbound by the Petroport filling station. The EMPD Community Liaison Unit members cornered the five men driving in a Toyota Avanza and seized three unlicensed firearms with 31 live rounds.

Over and above truck hijackings, the arrested men are believed to be part of a gang that is responsible for business robberies in and around Ekurhuleni. In-depth investigations are under way to establish whether they can be positively linked to the crimes.

It was established that the suspects are from KwaZulu-Natal and hole themselves up in hostels in Katlehong and Tokoza.

The CLU members recovered a 9mm Daewoo pistol with eight live rounds, a 9mm Star pistol with 10 live rounds and a 9mm Vektor pistol with 13 live rounds.

The arrested suspects are aged between 26 and 32. They were charged at Vosloorus police station and were expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, June 2.
