For Germiston artist Gerrit Hugo, art is not merely a passion, it is a way of life.
Driven by the belief that creative expression has the power to change the world one brushstroke at a time, Hugo continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of local talent.
His love for art began at a young age, starting with simple animation sketches during his school days. While many of his early peers eventually transitioned into corporate careers due to the financial challenges often faced by working artists, Hugo stayed true to his calling. Today, watching him at work remains a joy for the community.
Hugo’s journey as an instructor began unexpectedly at Majestic in Lambton, a hub where local creatives gather to expand their skills. Following the passing of the center’s former art instructor, students approached Hugo to step into the role.

“At first, I hesitated when they asked me to teach because I still saw myself as a student and didn’t know how to instruct others,” said Hugo.
“However, I decided to embrace the challenge.
“I came to Majestic to showcase some of my work and continue growing my art,” said Hugo. “It is a space where creatives gather to expand their knowledge and learn from one another.”
Over the past two years, Hugo has led the classes, shaping the skills of emerging artists while refining his own craft. The initiative has already borne fruit, with several of his students successfully turning their artistic talents into commercial ventures.
“The teaching experience has been mutually beneficial, keeping my techniques sharp and fostering a collaborative environment where teacher and students continuously learn from one another,” said Hugo.

In addition to instructing, Hugo has become a familiar face across the local landscape, taking on commercial signage and custom decorative projects. He is currently putting the finishing touches on a residential mural in Lambton depicting a coastal landscape complete with ocean views, yachts, beach houses, and lush trees.
Looking ahead, Hugo aims to exhibit his work in formal galleries while remaining committed to his daily artistic journey and community mentorship.
Art classes with Gerrit Hugo take place at Majestic in Lambton on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 and Saturdays from 11:00 to 13:00. Further details regarding his work and ongoing projects are available on his Facebook page under Gerrit Hugo.
