The Katlehong police recently arrested a 29-year-old man from the Siphamandla informal settlement for murder.
It is alleged that the suspect beat his 15-year-old girlfriend, who was visiting him from Zonkizizwe, to death with a garden shovel.
“The motive for the murder is still unknown,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, of the Ekurhuleni West Cluster.
The man was taken to the Katlehong Police Station, where he was detained pending his appearance in court.
“While in the holding cells of the station the suspect attempted to commit suicide,” said Ndobe.
It is reported that the man tried to hang himself using his shoelaces.
“He was found during a routine cell search.
“Officers were able to save him and he will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon,” Ndobe said.
