8 year old boy drowns in flooded trench in Vosloorus

An eight-year-old boy has drowned in an abandoned area that became flooded, on Saturday, November 5. The abandoned site, at the side of Moagi Road between Spruitview and Vosloorus, was once used for making bricks.

The boy allegedly went to swim with his friend (7) in the flooded area when he drowned.
According to police spokesperson Sgt Rufus Thema, the friend reported the matter at home at around 1.30pm and the police were alerted at around 4pm.
Sgt Thema said the water rescue team arrived on the scene at around 6pm the same day.
Mbebezi Thavhaha,
The distraught father of the child, said he did not want to talk to the media.
I don’t want to speak to you or anyone about this, especially as I’ve just also lost my cousin in an accident. This is painful, I can’t handle it,  said Thavhaha.

William Ntladi, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, said they abandoned the search on Saturday for safety purposes as it was getting dark.

It only took him only 15 minutes to recover the body at the two-and-a-half-metre mark. The spot was full of roots underneath where the child was trapped. We brought the child out at around 8.30am in the presence of the parents.

Ntladi explained that a pair of sandals was found on the scene but it was uncertain whether they belonged to the deceased or someone else. Communication officer at the Vosloorus Police Station, Capt Piet Roussouw, warned the public about the accident scene.

That place is very dangerous. I would like to warn parents not to allow their children to go and play there. Beside the drowning of the young boy, there were previously reported cases of robbery and assault there. People must stay away,  said Roussouw.
