Women in law enforcement took the lead in a stop-and-search operation in Germiston on August 26 as part of Women’s Month activities aimed at strengthening community safety.

The operation, conducted under the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Operation Basadi, was led by Germiston SAPS station commander Brigadier Nonhlahla Shezi.

The operation began with a morning parade outside the parking area at the Germiston Council Chambers before teams were deployed to conduct stop-and-search operations in the area.

Operation Basadi has been conducted throughout Women’s Month by the SAPS, highlighting the role of women in law enforcement and their contribution to combating crime and keeping communities safe.

“As we close off Women’s Month, women continue to lead from the front,” said Shezi.

The operation brought together several stakeholders, including SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, community patrollers, the Community Policing Forum and Graphite Security.

Shezi said the operation aimed not only at crime prevention but also at promoting women’s empowerment and improving the response to sensitive crimes.

“This was also to strengthen public trust, connecting with women in communities and creating a safer environment for residents,” she said.

During the operation, 11 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested, while four taxis were impounded.

Two J534 fines were also issued during the operation.

Shezi said the collaborative approach between law enforcement agencies, security stakeholders and community structures remained important in strengthening crime prevention efforts.

The Operation Basadi activities form part of ongoing efforts to ensure women continue playing an active role in law enforcement and community safety beyond Women’s Month.
