A case of culpable homicide was opened with the Primrose police after the death of a motorcyclist in a New Year’s Eve accident. The accident took place at the corner of Willow and Rietfonetein roads, in Primrose, on the afternoon of December 31. An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team and paramedics from the Primrose Fire Station responded to the crash between a bakkie and motorbike at 3.52pm.

After having to live in appalling conditions, five dogs were saved by inspectors from the Germiston SPCA recently. Manager and senior inspector Burt Coetzee and trainee inspector Thabang Mabasa went to investigate a complaint of animal cruelty at the Wally Hayward complex in Elandsfontein after the resident failed to adhere to the 24-hour warning they had issued. They found that the dogs were locked up in the third floor complex unit in an outright filthy manner.

A police officer was shot in the head while responding to a business robbery at a BP garage, in the Twala Section of Katlehong North, early last Thursday morning. According to police the officer, Const Tshepo Tladi, was shot in the head as police tried to stop the fleeing suspects. He was transported to Union Hospital, in Alberton, in a critical condition but he later succumbed to his injuries. However, new information, in the form of a video, has come to light which suggests that the officer was allegedly shot by one of his own.

Laerskool Die President was abuzz as pupils took their seats in anticipation of another academic year recently. The new Grade Ones were thrilled to be at ‘big school’ and to start learning. Though the first day of school was both exciting and scary for the little ones, they settled down quickly and started work. Principal Sybrand van Dyk could hardly contain his excitement as he welcomed old and new students to the school for another year. “I wish all the students and teachers all of the best for the year ahead,” van Dyk said.
