Community meeting held

Nkosi spoke about the Early Childhood Development (ECD) project that is going to take place soon. The budget for the project has been approved, she said.

The community of Ward 47 in Vosloorus held their first meeting of the year at the Nguni Hall on Sunday, January 29.

The meeting was called by Clr Thandi Nkosi, who was accompanied by her colleague Clr Alfred Sibanyoni of Ward 44 and 47 committee members.

Nkosi explained the purpose of the day.

“Firstly we want to welcome back people of the ward from the festive season and inform them about the latest projects that are going to take place within the community. We also want to congratulate learners who passed Grade 12 and encourage those who didn’t pass. We want them to know that there is still time to turn their fortunes around and make big things happen in their lives,” explained Nkosi.

Nkosi spoke about the Early Childhood Development (ECD) project that is going to take place soon. The budget for the project has been approved, she said.

“The (ECD) project, worth millions of Rands, will start very soon and will create a lot of job opportunities for the local people and small businesses,” said Nkosi.

Nkosi calmly listened to the community members’ problems. Among other things, they were concerned about drug abuse and school pregnancies. They also wanted to understand the duties of a ward committee, as there are issues with grass-cutting in the townships.

Nkosi said the municipality is working hard to deliver services to the people. As for the issue of drug abuse, Nkosi said the community must work hand in hand with the police in eradicating drugs.

“If only the dealers could be arrested, the problem of drugs would be solved. We as the community are the ones who know dealers and yet we are doing nothing about it. If you need to cure a problem like drugs, you need to stop it at the source,” said Nkosi.

Nkosi concluded by saying those people who did not get dustbins must register so as to get one.

Langalibalele Mzondeki, a resident of Extension 8, praised Nkosi and said the meeting was fruitful.

“What was discussed at the meeting is what everyone expected. What we want now is to see our youth benefiting from the next ECD project.

“As for the issue of pregnancy at schools, Nkosi has good plans for that. Nkosi said she is going to meet with the school principals and parents to address the issue and come up with solutions,” said Mzondeki.

Ward 44 Clr Alfred Sibanyoni encouraged people to join street committees so that the council knows who deserves to get jobs when the next ECD projects starts.
