Arrested for fake Eskom scam

Woman claims to work for Eskom, defrauds Katlehong community members of money.

The Katlehong police recently arrested a 27-year-old woman for fraud.

The arrest was made after police received reports that the suspect was defrauding people of Sunriview Section, in Katlehong, of their money.

“It is alleged that the woman would tell residents she was an Eskom employee and that they needed to pay her a certain amount of money to avoid having their electricity supply cut,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, of the Ekurhuleni West cluster.

“The woman’s alleged scam was discovered when a community member made an inquiry with Eskom’s Customer Care Centre in Katlehong and discovered that she in fact did not work there.”

She was apprehended by community members.

“Luckily for the suspect, a patrol vehicle was patrolling through the area and she was arrested before the community could enforce mob justice,” said Ndobe.

She was formally charged with fraud at the Katlehong Police Station and will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
