Trevor Hawley, who was well-known in the Germiston community, died unexpectedly, recently.
Trevor, who was born on May 22, 1959, was the youngest sibling in the Hawley family and worked for about 30 years alongside his brother, Collen (who died last year), in the family business.
The family home where Trevor was born, in Rietfontein Road, Primrose, was also the business premises.
He loved life, had many interests and was, at heart, a “boer” who loved riding horses and motorbikes.
According to his family, Trevor was very young at heart and when asked “When are you going to grow up?” he would reply, “Why? I am happy with myself”.
In 2010 he married Liz.
He will be sorely missed and always remembered for his enthusiasm for body building, being a keen rugby supporter and his great sense of humour.
This poem was written by his family in his memory:
“With mischievous look and winning ways,
Spread his sunshine from earliest days.
Between rivers, on the Vaal-Harts scheme,
Rode a princely horse and lived his dream.
Back in Primrose, the boy became a man,
Took a principled stand – very few men can.
Of granite and marble he came to know a lot,
Sold and sold until there was almost no stock.
For him the Kalahari was every hunter’s dream,
Dropped a buck or two, enough to feed the team.
Master storyteller, with spontaneity and wit,
Kept us spellbound as roast turned on the spit.
No, he was not perfect, like all of us erred,
Quickly readjusted and continued undeterred.
As police reservist, he spent many a scary night,
Protecting plot holders from crime and fright.
Pumped iron regularly with the local best,
Until the sad day, his heart demands final rest.
Into the sunset our brave cowboy then rode,
Leaving a sense of loss, too painful to behold.
Comforted by heritage of fond memories left behind,
And in a Higher Hand, raising those He calls to mind.”
