Pilot dies in plane crash near freeway

A pilot was killed when the mini aircraft he was flying crashed near the R59 freeway, south-bound to Vereeniging, on Sunday, May 21.

He was declared dead on the scene by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) paramedics.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said rescue teams from Thokoza and Palm Ridge fire stations immediately responded to the scene.

“On arrival, the body of a male pilot with poly-trauma was found still trapped inside the wreckage.

“Pre-hospital medical treatment was initiated. Unfortunately the patient couldn’t respond positively to the treatment and was declared dead on the scene,” said Ntladi.

He said the scene was then handed over to the SAPS.

“At the same time the SAPS consulted the aviation authorities to come on scene to conduct further investigations.

“The only available information found by SAPS is that the plane took off from Rand Airport in Germiston.

“No one knew where it was destined to land,” Ntladi said.
