The roads surrounding the Makause informal settlement were closed last Monday morning due to a service delivery protest. “Though the roads in the area have been closed the protest remains peaceful with officers from the SAPS and EMPD monitoring the situation,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

It was reported, during a service delivery protest at the Makause informal settlement, last Monday, a number of shops within the Makause informal settlement were looted by protesters. “We are currently helping the shop owners to move their stock to safety,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

One male pilot was declared dead by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) paramedics after the light aircraft he was flying crashed near the R59 highway south bound to Vereeniging, on Sunday, May 21.

The metro responded to last Monday’s service delivery protest at the Makause informal settlement, reassuring residents that a process to reallocate them to an identified piece of land was already underway. “The first group made up of 1 000 residents will be relocated, in July, to an identified piece of land in Germiston Extension 46 in line with the municipal schedule. “The remaining residents will benefit from the metro’s Re-blocking Programme, which is aimed at re-configuring the current layout of informal settlements and re-organising the ground plan to optimally utilise space to promote the health, safety and well-being of households, with a focus on promoting accelerated service delivery to informal settlements,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro.

Emergency services worked tirelessly and late into the night, last Thursday, to recover the bodies of two men who were trapped in a Primrose mine shaft. The bodies of the miners were recovered by the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue crew, in collaboration with other private emergency services, the SAPS K-9 Unit, mine rescue services and USAR-SA.
