Take a Girl Child to Work Day at Germiston SAPS

Learners encouraged to become better individuals during the Take a Girl Child to Work event held at the Germiston Police Station.

All the attention and spotlight was on girls at the Take a Girl Child to Work programme held at the Germiston Police Station, on Thursday.

The event was organised by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Ekurhuleni West Cluster’s Social Crime Prevention Unit.

Over 300 girls, from different schools within Ekurhuleni, attended the event.

“The event started with a march from Railway Street to the Germiston Police Station,” said Capt George Raphulu, head of communications for the Germiston SAPS.

“The learners were carrying placards with the message ‘Stop women and children abuse’ and singing women empowerment songs throughout the march,” he said.

Motivational talks and career exhibitions were the second session of the programme.

“The career management unit guided the children through all the careers in policing,” said Raphulu.

“An exhibition was also put up for practical demonstrations like the fingerprint-taking process.”

Correctional services chaplain Fredelina Manganye kick-started the second session with an opening prayer.

She also shared a few words of encouragement, which ensured the learners were fired up when she said, “Rise above your circumstances, and always believe that one day you will be a pioneer of great things.”

Station commander for the Germiston SAPS, Brig Nkensani Lemba, also motivated the learners during her welcome.

“This day is about saving a girl child from poverty, rape and drugs, among other things,” said Lemba.

“I see a lot of people in this room who have the potential to change our country for the better.

“It is important for you to have a clear vision of where you want to go in life, even when others tell you that you will never amount to anything.

“Refuse to go down and always remember you have what it takes to become a better person.”

Among others, police members from Germiston, Elsburg, Bedfordview and Vosloorus police stations were present and helping with the day’s events.

“The schools represented included Dinwiddie High School, Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston, Buhle Park Secondary School, Phumula Gardens Secondary School and Voortrekker Secondary School,” said Raphulu.

The learners were all given goodie bags sponsored by Cell C, which sponsored the event.

To lighten the mood, comedian Dennis Roro had everybody in stitches during the course of the event.
