The top five stories on www.germistoncitynews.co.za for the week, July 29 to August 4, were:

1. Task team recover hijacked vehicles in Katlehong

The Ekurhuleni West Cluster Task Team recently recovered two hijacked vehicles in Katlehong. The Volkswagen and Dodge, which were reportedly hijacked in Alberton and Booysens respectively, were discovered at a house in Moleleki Extension Two. “Officers were in the area following a lead when they discovered the Volkswagen at a house in the Moleleki section,” explained Capt Mega Ndobe, the corporate communications officer for the Katlehong police.

2. Four found with stolen vehicle in Katlehong

During a routine patrol of Katlehong recently members of the EMPD stopped the driver of a suspicious looking vehicle in Ramokonopi West. “Officers asked the vehicle’s four occupants, aged between 28 and 37, to get out of the vehicle while they searched it,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, the corporate communications officer for the Katlehong police. During the search, officers discovered that the vehicle, a Volkswagen Polo, had been reported stolen at the Germiston Police Station.

3. Beware ‘one ring’ scam calls from international number, police warn

Police are warning cellphone users about falling victim to the ‘One Ring’ scam. This new scam, which is said to have originated in Japan, starts off with one ring, making the user think that it was a missed call, according to Brig Stokkies Coetzee of the Gauteng police.

4. Huffing and puffing with Reefsteamers

Steam trains have always captured the imagination of both young and old. There is nothing quite like the huffing and puffing of a locomotive as it pulls a heavy train up a hill. When the South African Railways cancelled steam on their main lines, a small group of enthusiasts decided to preserve this piece of our history by saving some of the last running steam locomotives in South Africa.

5. SPCA receives funds from local cycling club

Germiston Wheelers Cycling Club raised funds in Alberton recently to come to the aid of the Germiston SPCA. “We read an article in the newspaper that said of a financial crisis at the Germiston SPCA, so we decided to do something about it,” said Xanthe Schwark from the Germiston Wheelers.
