Klopper Park Primary School saw the official opening of a classroom dedicated to The Link Literacy Project recently.
The school is the only non-fee-paying school in the area.
It has 1 200 learners, with class sizes ranging between 40 and 60 children.
To assist with additional literacy and maths education for its learners, the school has partnered with The Link.
The Link works with children in Grades Two and Three, where volunteers assist children through one-on-one sessions, addressing literacy and maths.
There are currently 11 Link Centres operating in schools across Johannesburg, which have all partnered with The Link due to the incredible results the programme has achieved with the children over the years.
These centres are based in underprivileged schools in Brixton, Highlands North, Killarney, Midrand, Orange Grove, Parktown, Riversands, Yeoville, Norwood, Melville and Klopper Park.
The centres operate out of the school hall, library, or, in some instances, from allocated classrooms.
Over 1 000 children benefit from the programme each week during their normal school term curriculum and most of the children have two lessons every week.
The centres are managed and staffed by a team of over 500 volunteers who are members of the community.
The Link was founded in 2010 by Margi Bashall, a dedicated teacher who was inspired to help those less fortunate, and is funded by The Link Trust, a non-profit organisation established to support the development of literacy and maths in children for whom English is a second language.

This milestone was made possible by a very generous donation from Vintage with Love – the dream of two fashion-forward women who annually call on all women to clear their wardrobes and to donate their once-loved fashion items to a good cause.
The items are then sold at the Vintage with Love fashion sales.
The Link is hugely grateful to have been nominated as one of the Vintage with Love beneficiaries, as the generous donation enabled the programme to acquire a beautiful new pre-fab classroom.
The Link believes that every child should be given the opportunity to progress in life but, sadly, without being able to read properly, opportunities become limited.
The Link is always looking for more volunteers.
Only two hours per morning can make a real difference in a child’s life, with many volunteers only committing to one morning per week.
One does not have to be a teacher to participate, as training is provided.
