Driver nabbed doing 226km/h on N3 highway in Germiston

EMPD members target speedsters on the N3 highway.

EMPD High Speed Unit officers arrested a number of drivers for excessive speeding on the N3 highway south, last weekend.

The speed law enforcement took place between the Geldenhuys Interchange and the Rand Airport exit.

The three drivers nabbed last Sunday included a 29-year-old driver in a white Mercedes Benz AMG who was caught driving at the breakneck speed of 226km/h.

He attributed his excessive speeding to being late to get home.

The other two drivers were a 23-year-old male driver with two passengers in his vehicle clocked at 165km/h giving the reason that he was rushing to get his diabetes medicine and a 36-year-old male driver in a blue BMW sedan, also with two passengers, clocked at 165km/h advancing the reason that he was late for a wedding.

Meanwhile, last Saturday, on the same stretch of the highway, two male drivers aged 28 and 29 years old respectively, one in a BMW and one in an Opel sedan, were arrested for excessive speeding doing 179km/h and 184km/h citing lateness for hospital and home as reasons.

The speed limit on the highway is 120km/h.

All the arrested speedsters were detained at the Germiston Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving and later released after each posted bail of R1 500.

They were due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court last Monday.
