Senior citizens relish party
More than 60 senior citizens received groceries and blankets from Ward 63 Clr Nomsa Phakathi and her ward committee at the Siluma Old-Age Home in Katlehong on December 9.
According to Clr Phakathi, this occasion was meant to recognise and remember our elderly folk and to spend some time with them during the festive season.
“These are people who took care of us and they also continued to look after their grandchildren. It is important for us to show appreciation in the form of gifts that we are giving them today,” she said.
Ward committee chairperson Nhlanhla Mahlobo said: “This is a good event because senior citizens were excited and overwhelmed that they were also remembered and recognised for the role they continue to play in our society.
Mahlobo further spoke about the importance of maintaining a good relationship between a ward committee and ward councillor.
He said their relationship with the ward councillor is a healthy one.
“She always shares information with us and that also assists in addressing some of the community issues. Together as a ward committee and councillor we sit in meetings where we discuss issues and come up with a plan on how to address those issues,” he said.
“My advice to other ward councillors in Ekurhuleni is to let them give ward committees an opportunity to work with them because it’s very important that they should work together in order to address the issues of our society easily,” he concluded.
A 68-year-old pensioner, Edif Nyofane, said they are grateful for the gifts they have received and wished the ward councillor and her team well.
The occasion was held in a jovial mood which saw the elderly being treated to a special meal and lots of activities from local groups including a inspirational message from apostle Tshepo Mabhena of Everlasting Life Bible Church in Katlehong.
